The 7th Architectural Creation Award Review Board of the Architectural Society of Shanghai China deliberated and decided that Shanghai Pudong QianTanHouYuan Community Center renewal project designed by LACIME won the Award for Outstanding Works in Landscape Architecture.

General Layout Plan

Jiabao QianTanHouYuan is located in Shanghai Pudong Sanlin area. The plot is a strip 250 meters long from north to south and 80 meters wide from east to west. Urban roads line the north and south sides of it. Its east side is Vanke Wujiefang, and the Xiyang River branch flows through the west side in a north-south direction, separating the site from Yuntai Road and forming a 60-80 meters wide green belt. The first and second floors of the original four-storey building and the underground space have been transformed into a community centre for the entire area. At the same time, the bridge element is introduced and integrated with the green belt on both sides of the river. Creating rich landscape space and enhancing the vitality of the community is our design concept.

Creation of Positive Urban Landscape and Architectural Space

Introduction of footbridge: through communication with government departments, the landscape bridge is introduced to Dongming Road on the west side as the community center and the main pedestrian passage along the green belt of the river. This allows pedestrians to experience the fun brought by the river and the landscape green belt as they enter the community and return home. After crossing the landscape bridge, one can reach the main entrance square, and the bamboo forest water features on both sides enhance the atmosphere of the entrance square.

Layout and function implantation of the river green belt: the layout design of waterfront green belt is carried out to add waterfront footpath, recreational and fitness track and children's entertainment area to provide active public spaces for the community.

The integration of the building entrance and the landscape axis: the main entrance square space of the community adopts the open design. The green belts on both sides and the entrance plaza are designed in combination. The garage entrance uses hollowed-out landscape wall and light aluminum overhanging roof, which not only avoids the impact of the garage entrance on the main entrance, but can also be integrated with the entrance space as part of the landscape architecture. The hollowed-out landscape wall gate ensures visual continuity between the interior landscape axis and the landscape footbridge.

Update of Building Function and Landscape Space

Implantation of the community center: the original building is a 4-storey residential building, which is difficult to realize the function of the community center of 400 square meters. By integrating the first and second floors above ground with some of the functions of the underground garage, the design ensures the minimum distance on vertical traffic.

Sunken courtyard: the center forms a sunken landscape courtyard centering on the community function of the underground garage section. It optimizes lighting and ventilation, and forms a community center functional space along the landscape with the courtyard on the ground. In addition, there is direct access to the community center from the underground garage, and the entrance to the drop-off area faces the waterfall landscape of the sunken courtyard.

Architectural Form and Facade

The facade of the community center of QianTanHouYuan is designed in a public construction way, and it is in sharp contrast to the residential building in the background. In this way, the community center and its landscape parts can stand out in the environment, thus creating a more attractive and positive image of urban space and architecture.

The contrast between the virtual and real volume of the residential function and the public function: the design technique skillfully connects the solid volume with higher privacy of the north facade and the virtual volume with more open public space of the south facade. The north facade uses more concise and powerful vertical lines to divide the large area of stone, forming a strong contrast with the large area of glass of the south facade, and the combination of virtuality and reality reflects the different requirements of the internal space functions. The glass box at the corner of the entrance on the 1st floor extends lightly over the sunken courtyard, breaking the flat form of the facade and making the whole building appear diversified and light.

Framed views facing the green belt along the river: on the west facade facing the river, the south balconies are turned to allow for a better view of the landscape along the river. Naturally formed thin aluminum plates bring twists and changes to the south side and outline the public space along the river.

Printed glass louvers and perforated aluminum plates: printed glass louvers designed according to the width of the module are used on the outside of the south balconies. While hiding the balcony railings, they highlight the form and structure of the 2-4 floors, forming a rich light and shadow space. Perforated aluminum plates are used at the bottom of the aluminum plate suspended ceilings, which make the architectural form seem lighter.
