The lanes in Shanghai are sexy
They give people a feeling of physical intimacy
They have coolness and warmth to touch
They can be perceived
And they have some ideas of their own
- Song of Everlasting Regret by Wang Anyi
"It would be a shame if one went to Shanghai and didn't visit the lanes," said Chen Danyan, a well-known writer in Shanghai. "The lanes are the most authentic and open space in Shanghai, where people actually live. There is always a sense of peace and practicality in the lanes of Shanghai, which is the essence of Shanghai people's life."

Support the Army and Cherish the People 丨The Origin of Lanes
The lane was renamed "Aimin Lane" after the Good Eighth Company had camped on the Guizhou Road. Located in the hinterland north of Nanjing East Road, it has the atmosphere and rich style of old Shanghai.
Faced with these existing problems that need to be improved, we can't help but desire to start our design.

In 2015, rescue protection measures were implemented and Shikumen Lane was renovated. The buildings involved in the project include the enclosed lane outside and the three Shikumen buildings inside. The main entrance and exit is located at Ningbo Road and Tianjin Road, with a width of about 3 meters inside the neighborhood.

Imprint of Time丨Renovation of the Lane
On the one hand, the project needs to consider the required budget for renovation; on the other hand, creativity and innovation should take into account the actual usage requirements of residents.
After repeated site visits, public communication and program adjustment, the project finally returns to the essence of design. It respects the time and warmth carried by the lane, and uses modern design techniques to wake up the old lane style, which has been drowned in the dust of history and the hustle and bustle of the city.
The project updates existing living facilities, such as bicycle parking areas, public laundry-drying racks, rain water head, etc. Reasonable layout and optimized functions can reduce the visual burden. The multi-functional steel frames can realize functions of laundry-drying and lighting. The integrated design can beautify the roadway while providing space for laundry drying, thus creating the effect of appreciating landscape while walking on the laneway.

The layout arrangement of traffic flow lines in the lane, the transformation of ground pavement, the introduction of characteristic leisure benches and the ingenious selection and application of green plants all make the originally gloomy laneway revitalized, and they also provide new leisure and social life spaces for the residents.

Optimization of the Entrance
The project demolishes the old and dilapidated primary and secondary doors and replaces them with new ones in the style of old Shanghai. The external facades are transformed uniformly, so that the door head and garbage room form a whole and the interface becomes continuous. This not only beautifies the entrance image, but also alleviates the hidden safety hazards brought by the complicated flow of people in the community. At the same time, it also improves the bad smell and sanitation of the garbage room to some extent.

In the environment with narrow laneway, insufficient light and limited space, the choice of plant type is particularly critical. The plants selected need to be able to adapt to the environment of constant shade and match the overall style. After several rounds of screening, manuka, carnations and ivy are selected to break down the flat facade of the flower bed to enrich the greening layers and make the overall landscape appear more dynamic.

Details of Construction Drawings
The quality of the landscape design is reflected in the details of the construction drawings, especially the detail design of the security pavilion. In order to protect the integrity of the external facade glass, the steel keel is hidden inside the glass. Meanwhile, electronic display screen, office desktop and express delivery window are designed to greatly enhance the functionality.
Never Stop Growing 丨New Life of the Lane
With the progress of Shanghai's internationalization, people's life is becoming busier and busier. People can only find the warmth in their childhood memories in the lanes hidden in the bustling downtown. Through design and small-scale update, a door head, an old wall and a section of pavement can regain indomitable vitality and appeal.
Ending
Time must not rush me
I'll take it as it comes
Time must not rush me
The past is still to be sought
March is a good time in spring. Walking through the renovated Aimin Lane again, the breeze blows over and the afternoon sunshine in the lane gives off a warm aroma. Look at the sunshine through your fingers, you will find that time passes quickly, and it will slip away inadvertently.
Looking back, you will deeply impressed by the slow and leisurely pace of life in the old lane.
